The Italian Sport Fishing and Underwater Activities Federation was born in 1942 with the aim to promote amateur sport fisheries.

Over the years, the aim has expanded through other areas. Today its activities, competitive and promotional, national and international, are managed by five specific areas: Fresh Waters, Sea Waters, Underwater Activities, Underwater Finswimming and Underwater Training.

Alongside the five sectors, there are some other operational structures, including: Water and Facilities Federal Commission (SFAI), Sport Judges Commission, Youth Commission, Education and Training Commission and the Memberships Commission.

Internationally, the Federation is a founding member of CIPS (International Sport Fishing Confederation) and of CMAS (World Confederation of Underwater Activities).
